What Size Steering Wheel Cover Do I Need?

Measure the outside diameter across the widest point and the grip circumference where your hand rests. Most passenger cars use covers labeled for 14.5 to 15 inches, but a thick grip, flat-bottom wheel, or truck wheel can need a different size. Do not round a 15.5-inch wheel down to 15 inches just because that size is common.

Measure the steering wheel's outside diameter across the widest point and the circumference of the grip itself. Many passenger cars use covers labeled for 14.5 to 15 inches, but a thick grip, flat-bottom wheel, unusual spoke shape, or large truck wheel can require a different design.

Take Two Measurements

Hold a tape measure straight across the wheel from the outside edge at one side to the outside edge at the other. Do not measure only the open center. Then wrap a flexible tape around the rim where your hand normally rests to record grip circumference; divide that number by about 3.14 if you need an approximate grip diameter.

Write both numbers down in inches. Do not round a 15.5-inch wheel down to 15 inches just because that size is common. A cover that is too small may not seat fully, while one that is too large can rotate.

Check Shape and Construction

An O-shaped wheel is round. A D-shaped wheel has a flatter lower section. Some full-circle covers are designed to accommodate both within a stated range, while segmented covers grip only selected sections. Heated wheels, thick factory padding, thumb rests, and large trim pieces can also affect the result.

Foneso's current full-circle and segmented listings commonly state a 14.5-to-15-inch range, but use the measurement on the individual product page. A size category is not a promise for every steering wheel.

Test the Cover After Installation

The cover should sit evenly around the rim with no folded edge. With the vehicle parked, hold the cover firmly and try to rotate it against the wheel. If it slips independently, remove it; a moving cover can interfere with steering control.

Once you have the two measurements and wheel shape, use the Foneso steering-wheel size finder, then compare Foneso steering wheel cover sizes to compare the listed ranges, full-circle and segmented designs, and grip materials.
